May 10 (Sun) at 09:00 — hiking through the martian colorful hills of the Gareji Desert PROGRAM This is one of the most atmospheric routes of Eastern Georgia. We've been to the desert often and combined two atmospheric routes which we will cover in one day. We walk through canyons and ridges and will see almond trees beginning to blossom. The views change with every step: soft desert lines, gorges, wide open space and silence. We'll reach the rocky and mysterious Dodo monastery (many see it from car windows but don't visit — and it's worth visiting!). We'll also go to the David-Gareji monastery and walk around its grounds. In a scenic spot we'll have a picnic (everyone brings their own snack). The final point of the hike is the Church of St. John the Baptist (Natlismcemeli). We'll climb to the tower to meet the sunset over the hills — one of the most beautiful and meditative moments here. Hiking: total distance ~9 km, ascent ↑150 m, descent ↓100 m. Time on the move ~5.5 h. Difficulty — easy (5/10), but interesting even for experienced hikers.
