“Birtvisi: Lost World Among Rocks” — a hike with a biologist Just an hour from Tbilisi lies one of Georgia’s most unusual places — the Birtvisi canyons. It is a true stone labyrinth of cliffs, gorges and narrow passages, among which for nearly a thousand years stand the ruins of the medieval Birtvisi fortress, once considered nearly impregnable. In June the canyons are especially beautiful. The forests still keep spring freshness, many plants of the Trialeti Range are in bloom, and in shaded gorges you can encounter rare insects, lizards and hear birds usually unnoticed by city dwellers. Birtvisi is interesting not only for its history. Together we will find out: • why these landscapes formed in southern Georgia; • how plants survive on vertical cliffs and in dry conditions; • what traces of the ancient Mediterranean remain in the Caucasus flora; • which reptiles and insects you can meet here; • how nature helped the fortress defenders make Birtvisi one of the country’s most inaccessible citadels. We will see rocky bastions, viewpoints with stunning vistas and narrow passages between stone walls. Also — stories about the living nature of the Caucasus and its remarkable inhabitants. This is a walk not for those who just follow the route, but for those who want to understand what they see around them. The group will be accompanied by Aleksey Sivukhin, biologist, head of the "Arche" center, and co-founder of Tbilisi’s Auditoria. Come and explore one of Georgia’s most amazing corners — where history, geology and living nature have woven into a single stone labyrinth.
