While height, blood type or eye color are straightforward, when it comes to character we want to believe we are authors of ourselves rather than copies of our parents. But how free are we from heredity? Are talents for mathematics, personality traits or tendencies to aggression inherited? Where in this biological blueprint does the influence of genes end and our own “self” begin? On May 5 (Tuesday) at 19:30 biologist Simkha Borman will explain how the chemistry of DNA turns into our feelings and why searches for a “genius gene” are as hopeless as searches for a “gene for autism.” We will cover: * From molecules to actions: how the chain “gene — protein” turns into complex behavioral responses. * Heredity vs. environment: why some parents have radically different children. * Biology of the mind: the hereditary component in the development of depression and schizophrenia. * Limits of the possible: can you change your temperament if most of our traits are determined by hundreds of genes rather than a single “lucky” DNA segment?
