Program details — “Different Languages”. There are several thousand languages in the world; they sound and are structured very differently. Why did that happen? How do languages differ from one another? Why are some similar, like Romanian and Portuguese, while others have almost nothing in common, like Russian and Chinese? How do languages change over time and could we speak with our great-great-great...grandfather if we met him? What happens when different languages meet in the same territory or even in one mind? Was there ever a single language for humanity and could it ever appear? Format: heuristic conversations, games, linguistic tasks — we will talk and laugh in various languages, learn a lot about the internal structure of languages, and create our own! The course helps when learning new languages, is useful for bilinguals, and reveals keys to understanding languages. It will be interesting, useful and fun! Instructor: Andrey Desnitsky — linguist, PhD, specialist in ancient languages, experienced teacher for children and teens.
